Brighter than a Thousand Suns: Luminescence from Noble Metals

چکیده

Metals usually appear shiny and reflect light, but even seemingly smooth mirrors can luminesce under photoexcitation, i.e. absorb and reemit light. Although this phenomenon has been known for almost 50 years, and plays a significant role in the interaction of light waves with plasmon modes of metallic nanostructures, given the inherent momentum mismatch between electrons and photons the microscopic origin of luminescence remains a controversial topic. In particular, the comparison of one-photon and multi-photon processes has remained challenging. Under UV excitation, interband transitions may occur, which could indeed induce luminescence by electron-hole recombination. But how is non-linear luminescence generated under excitation below the dominant interband transition?

Postcolonial feminist reading of Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns

Postcolonial feminism is an exploration into the interactions of colonialism with gender, nation, class, race, and sexualities in different contexts of women’s lives. Postcolonial feminism or the ‘Third World feminism’ originated as a critique of mainstreams in the Western feminist theorists, investigating the portrayal of women in the literature and society of the colonized countries as margin...

Evidence of seasonal variation in bioluminescence of Amphipholis squamata (Ophiuroidea, Echinodermata): effects of environmental factors.

The bioluminescence of Amphipholis squamata was assessed from freshly collected individuals for 16 successive months, and from individuals maintained in the laboratory under various experimental conditions of salinity, temperature and photoperiodic regime. Field investigations showed that bioluminescence intensity and kinetics varied seasonally, with the light produced being brighter and faster...

Hot-Electron Intraband Luminescence from Single Hot Spots in Noble-Metal Nanoparticle Films.

Disordered noble-metal nanoparticle films exhibit highly localized and stable nonlinear light emission from subdiffraction regions upon illumination by near-infrared femtosecond pulses. Such hot spot emission spans a continuum in the visible and near-infrared spectral range. Strong plasmonic enhancement of light-matter interaction and the resulting complexity of experimental observations have p...

Fainter and closer: finding planets by symmetry breaking.

Imaging of planets is very difficult, due to the glare from their nearby, much brighter suns. Static and slowly-evolving aberrations are the limiting factors, even after application of adaptive optics. The residual speckle pattern is highly symmetrical due to diffraction from the telescope's aperture. We suggest to break this symmetry and thus to locate planets hidden beneath it. An eccentric p...

Symbiotic characterization of Vibrio fischeri ES114 mutants that display enhanced luminescence in culture.

Vibrio fischeri ES114 is a bioluminescent symbiont of the squid Euprymna scolopes. Like most isolates from E. scolopes, ES114 produces only dim luminescence outside the host, even in dense cultures. We previously identified mutants with brighter luminescence, and here we report their symbiotic phenotypes, providing insights into the host environment.
